Subway cuts salt

SUBWAY® recently pledged its ongoing commitment to the Public Health Responsibility Deal at a parliamentary reception for MPs on 18th March 2014.

The event was attended by MPs from across the UK and allowed Rachana Pancholi, Development Agent for South Yorkshire and Derbyshire and National Board member, the opportunity to affirm the brand’s commitment to working with the Department of Health in achieving its public health goals through the Responsibility Deal. Rachana also described the impressive economic contribution that the SUBWAY® brand already makes to the UK economy, as well as details of the expansion plans going forward to 2020. Rachana had the pleasure in announcing that the brand has just committed to a seventh nutrition-based Responsibility Deal pledge – the Out of Home Salt Targets pledge.

Public Health Minister Jane Ellison stated the Government “cannot make progress on some of the big public health challenges our nation faces if we do not have the out of home sector on board” citing the fact that over 150 million meals are eaten outside the home each week in the UK.

She said: “From the outset SUBWAY® has been a committed Responsibility Deal partner and continues to lead the way…The out of home sector has to date been vastly underrepresented in terms of commitment across salt and calories and we need all sectors of the food industry to play their part in contributing to the healthy living environment. I am really impatient to see more progress from other people to go where SUBWAY® has gone in making those commitments.”

The Minister revealed that she is a regular customer at her local SUBWAY® store in Clapham Junction. The Minister finished her speech by saying that “I want to pay tribute to SUBWAY® for being the first to step up and sign up to the new salt targets for you sector. We are really really impressed and grateful for that. It is showing good leadership and I will make sure I draw attention to that at every opportunity I can.”

The Out of Home Salt Targets pledge aims to help consumers lower their salt intake while eating meals out of the home by limiting the amount of salt in popular dishes and children’s meals. More information on this pledge is available.
